Session 1: Multiculturalism and Linguistic Diversity
This session focuses on multiculturalism and linguistic diversity in different contexts in both the United States and Spain. Such contexts may include the schools, the home, public spaces and others. The experience of linguistic diversity in the United States is related primarily to the presence of different immigrant groups, of which the most numerous is Spanish speaking. In Spain, linguistic multiculturalism stems principally from the existence of regional languages (Catalan, Galician, Basque and Valencian among others).

Session 2: Multiculturalism and Socio-Cultural Diversity
North American students in Spain increasingly come into contact with Spaniards born outside of the country or those born here whose family is of non-peninsular origin, from places as diverse as Morocco, Latin America, and Rumania. The North American students, in turn, bring a great variety of cultural family backgrounds with them to Spain. This context of multiculturalism and social diversity can either be interpreted as a pluralistic and enriching reality, or as a threatening tendency. Ideology plays a fundamental part here.

Session 3: Multiculturalism and Educational Diversity
In this new multicultural society, we encounter students with many diverse learning needs in the classroom. This means that teaching methodology must be adapted to the new educational scene so as to achieve the best results for everyone in the classroom, no matter what their cultural origins, previous educational experience, or contact with the academic matter at hand might be. In this session, it would be interesting to hear from experts, educators and researchers as well as from students.
